After consulting with the owner and staff and researching the area I proposed a plan that would modernise the interior while maintaining all of its traditional appeal, and add to its character by increasing the historical focus. The new interior was to have a more industrial/vintage look by using metal, wood, leather and wool in the décor that would link it to the history of Ulverston, and its industrial and agricultural heritage. We would maximise the original waterwheel feature by improving the lighting and surrounding area, and introduce new decorative features based around the history of Ulverston and famous Ulverstonians. Work was completed in early February and feedback from the owner, staff and customers has been hugely positive. The quotes dotted around the building from famous Ulverstonians and the timeline of local historical events, which stretches between the two ground floor bars, have created a number of talking points and even sparked debate between some of the locals.

The Mill is a 3 storey pub and restaurant in the centre of Ulverston. Formerly one of the towns flour mills, parts of this grade II listed building date back to the 12th century. Although it had been refurbished in 2009 the decor was looking very tired, and the owner wanted to give it a makeover as part of a larger programme of investment, which included bringing in multi award winning Steven Doherty as The Mills Executive Consultant Chef.
